Características

"Published by Bertrand Editora, one of Portugal's most prestigious publishers and one of the oldest European publishing houses with nearly three hundred years of history, this is an abbreviated selection of some of the most striking and significant poems by Fernando Pessoa, consisting of writings by Pessoa himself and three of his most prominent heteronyms: Alberto Caeiro, Ricardo Reis, and Álvaro de Campos. All the texts and poems are translated from Portuguese into English by internationally published poet and award-winning literary translator Calvin Olsen, who currently teaches at Ohio State University."

"Fernando Pessoa was born in Lisbon in 1888 and died in the same city in 1935. Indeed, if literature and life were always the same thing for Pessoa, for the Portuguese people Pessoa and Lisbon will be, as well. As the premier name in Portuguese Modernism and one of the principal authors of world literature in the 20th Century, he stands, as did his predecessor, Luís de Camões, as the ultimate exponent of the beauty, quality, and importance of Portuguese poetry. A bookkeeper by profession, Pessoa was and i s, in the end, many things, but he preferred to live almost always in anonymity, having published just one book during his lifetime: Mensagem, in 1934. However, in addition to his own name, the various heteronyms he established that went on to produce cou ntless literary works continue to delight and enchant millions of readers in all languages.
